Following the Light of Grace

Tuesday, January 7th, 1956

Dear Diary,

This morning, despite the cold still biting at our cheeks, Sister Mary Clare and I, along with many others, decided to brave the weather and walk to early Mass. We carried along our prayer book, and thankfully, Father Leroy’s Big Ashley wood-burning stove had already warmed up the little church by the time we arrived. Some of the farmers must have replenished Father’s woodpile, as there was a fresh stack by the stove. I decided to put in an extra log to keep the warmth going.

During the homily, Father spoke about the Magi and their unwavering obedience to the star that led them to Jesus. He reminded us of how their faith was immediate—they didn’t hesitate to follow the light of grace. After Mass, as Sister and I walked home, she explained more about the promptings of grace. She said that grace is like the star that led the Magi. It enlightens our hearts and guides us to do God’s will. But it’s up to us to listen and act without delay.

She reminded me of what we read in the meditation about how the Magi didn’t wait or question—they followed the star with trust and joy. Sister said we must be the same, always ready to answer God’s call and act on His grace. She said the Magi’s journey teaches us that the light of grace isn’t something we can ignore or put off because we risk losing it.

This afternoon, Sister made her delicious Wonder Bread. The smell of it baking filled the entire house, making it feel even cozier against the chill outside. I helped by measuring out the ingredients:

• 3 cups of bread flour

• 1 egg

• 1 cup of warm milk

• 1/3 stick of softened butter

• 4 tablespoons of sugar

• 1 package of yeast

• 1 teaspoon of salt

Sister kneaded the dough until it was smooth and let it rise by the fire before baking it to golden perfection. The bread came out soft and slightly sweet, just the way I like it. We enjoyed warm slices with butter and honey for supper, and I couldn’t help but think about the many blessings we have, even in the midst of winter’s cold.

“Dear Jesus, thank You for the gift of grace that lights our way, just as the star led the Magi to You. Help me to always be ready to follow Your will, without hesitation, and to listen to the promptings of grace in my heart. Thank You for Sister’s warmth, the comfort of our home, and the bread that nourishes us. Please watch over those who are cold tonight and bless them with Your love and protection. Amen.”

Goodnight, dear diary. I’ll think of the star and the Magi as I drift off to sleep.

Love,

Kathy
